The DoSeum is San Antonio's only museum just for children where kids learn by doing, creating and tinkering, instead of just looking and listening.
The Sensations Studio makes sound and light come alive. By playing with a wide variety of light and sound phenomena, kids explore the intersection between science and art. Although their attention may be focused on making music with at the DJ Station, or bouncing a laser around on mirrors, students are gaining an intuition for sound and light concepts.
Encourages children to use light and sound to create a sense of the world
Promotes communication with others through light and sound
Explores the physics of sound and light waves
Newborn to 4 years-old: UV Light Lab-- Children experiment with how different colors react under different colors of light, including UV. This helps kids to understand that the color we perceive for an object depends upon the light that illuminates it.
5 to 7 years-old: Mix-it-Up Stage--Near the entry to Sensations Studio, kids play “Light DJ” in this activity, as they can sit behind the control booth to mix the levels of red, blue, and green light on a screen, cast shadows, or even spin a disco ball. When not at the control booth, kids can walk behind the screen and magically appear to visitors!
8 to 11 years-old: Sound F/X Station-- Kids play DJ in this activity, as they can capture sounds and mix them together to make interesting new samples and layered tracks. This activity gives kids the chance to create their own music track from start to finish.
When you visit Sensations Studio, be sure to check the Art Studio, located near the back. We offer weekly programs, camps, and drop-in programs where children can engage their artistic imaginations!
