Exhibit Exclusive: The DoSeum Treehouse is Open!

Exhibit Exclusive: The DoSeum Treehouse is Open!

If you haven’t heard the news, our Treehouse is finally open! On Friday, August 21st, The DoSeum celebrated the opening of our highly anticipated treehouse with a ribbon cutting ceremony.

The treehouse, designed by San Antonio artist Attie Jonker and beautifully crafted from reclaimed wood, is a part of The DoSeum’s major initiative to make The DoSeum accessible to, and enjoyable for, all children. All of our exhibits, including our newly opened treehouse, are ADA certified. The treehouse is the most recent of our ADA accessible installations that also include a wheelchair accessible hydraulic excavator in Little Town, accessible puppet stage in Imagine It, and accessible water tables in Water Works.

Attie Jonker said of designing the Treehouse, "The first thing that came from my heart [was] to make this accessible to all children. That is the heart of The DoSeum."

The treehouse is wheelchair accessible, with a winding ramp and steel base that allows for wheelchair access. Attie Jonker said of designing the Treehouse, “The first thing that came from my heart [was] to make this accessible to all children. That is the heart of The DoSeum.”

It was only fitting that the unveiling was celebrated with Kinetic Kids, an organization whose mission is to create access to a wide variety of recreational, group, and individual exercise activities for children regardless of their abilities. Their mission complements our own belief that all of San Antonio’s children deserve access to best educational resources, and that The DoSeum is a place for all.

CEO of The DoSeum Vanessa Lacoss Hurd, said before the ribbon was cut, “The TreeHouse represents so much of what we want to be at The DoSeum—a place of absolute wonderment.”

With a few words and an enthusiastic countdown, Matthew of Kinetic Kids cut the yellow ribbon, and kids went clambering up the Treehouse, letting their imaginations run wild in the beautiful, creative space. With the unveiling of our treehouse, we hope to see all children gathering together to wonder, imagine, and create worlds for their own exploration.
