Why Do Cat's Eyes Shine At Night?

Come across a cat at night and you may be surprised to see them staring at you with glowing eyes, but see the same cat during the day and their eyes are not glowing — why? Join us for Ask A Doer and we’ll explore Livija’s question: Why do cats' eyes glow green at night?

Terms You’ve Learned:

Eye Shine: The reflection of light from the inner surface of an eye through the pupil

Nocturnal: An animal behavior characterized by being active during the night and sleeping during the day.

Tapetum Lucidum: A layer of tissue in the eyes that reflects incoming light, found in animals who are nocturnal or who live in the deep, dark sea.
