DIY Fairy Garden Terrarium

There’s a touch of magic that’s created when imagination and botany meet! For this DIY we are making a Fairy Garden Terrarium for your fairy, gnome, or other imaginary creature. Creating a Fairy Garden Terrarium is a fun activity to do with your family, and it allows your child to explore their imagination while creating a unique garden to display around your home.  Once your Fairy Garden Terrarium is complete, your child can continue to learn about soil science and gardening. And during your next visit to The DoSeum, be sure to visit our very own Fairy Village!

What You'll Need:
  • Glass or plastic jar or container with a wide opening (lid optional)
  • Small rocks
  • Potting soil
  • Activated charcoal (can be sourced at a pet store or online)
  • Indoor plants (succulents work well)
  • Moss (optional)
  • Polymer clay or small decorative items (shells, rocks, plastic toys, etc.)
  • Paper and markers for sketching
  • Spray bottle & water for caring for your terrarium
Building Tips & Tricks:
  • Use a long-handled spoon to tap down rocks and soil into even layers.
  • If you are using pebbles and moss from outside, make sure to wash and remove any insects before placing them in the terrarium.
  • Polymer clay is fun for making mushrooms, fairies, and their homes! If you use clay, make sure to have an adult help you bake it according to the package directions. When you water your terrarium, make sure to only gently mist clay items or water around them to prevent decay.
  • Go wild with your imagination! Look at inspiration pictures in books or online for fairy gardens. Creating a story or picture first will allow you to create a fun character to design a home for!
  • Take care of your garden! Terrariums can last a long time with proper sunlight and watering.
